A movement to bring people closer to nature

We now host all kinds of events and community projects dotted around Cornwall – brief moments away from regular life to nurture the soul.

Most of all, we love meeting people. From the amazing local business tucked away in Truro, to creating magical experiences in nature for children, right through to the wonderful guests who hire our tipis. We are lucky enough to spend time celebrating with you and share these experiences. It’s because of you that our tipis are filled with so much happiness and energy. Thank you, one million times over.

Our Tipi Community; Room to Grow

One of the highlights from our 2019 community projects was the coming together of three Cornish social enterprises to create a new project for schools across Cornwall and beyond.

The Room To Grow Project, launched in July this year at Pensans School in Penzance was a collaboration between The Rock Pool Project, Wild Tipi and The Character Tree. The project was set up to teach children about their natural world and to develop skills in emotional resilience by giving them a chance to learn and play in nature. Held in three of Wild Tipi’s Giant Hat Tipis in the school’s field; the children were taken on a learning journey through the woods to the beach, right on their doorstep.

“This was the most extraordinary and joyful week for our children, parents and staff. The Room to Grow Project enabled all of our children to experience the magical and calming effect of the Giant Tipis, whilst engaging with nature and exploring their own inner resources,” explains school Head teacher, Angela Clay.

Each of the Giant Tipis took children into another world; starting with a woodland experience led by Sam Moore of Wild Tipi. Here, children were encouraged to take time to explore sensory activities and create woodland crafts. They also learnt about what it takes to set up one of the enormous Giant Hat Tipis, made in the UK from sustainable English Pine. The children were encouraged to switch off the busy world around them and engage their senses, experiencing the benefits of an immersion in nature.

They were then taken to the ‘beach’ in a second tipi where the Rock Pool Project provided a mobile rock pool, packed full of creatures including four different species of crabs, amazing fish, scallops and much, much more. This was an incredible opportunity for a sensory rich marine adventure that the children absolutely loved.

Finally, the children were given the chance to develop emotional resilience alongside the team from the Character Tree; helping them to use positive character behaviour through talk, play and hands on experience.

Sam Moore, Partner at Wild Tipi says of the Room to Grow Project, “This is the first step of an amazing journey to support young people by giving them the chance to learn and grow in nature. To see them explore, play and grow in confidence in just one day was truly wonderful.

To see the calming effect of an immersion in nature was truly profound and we hope to be able to reach and support more young people and school staff through this exciting project.”

We hope to be able to build on the success of The Room to Grow Project and work with schools all around the county to help them to learn and grow in nature.
